Authenticity and certification

We do not authenticate our own inventory, and we do not ask you to take our word for anything. Every autographed piece we list has been examined by an independent authentication house, and the certificate number that house issued is printed on the product page so you can verify it yourself before you buy.

Who does the authenticating

Three houses account for effectively all of the third-party autograph certification in the North American market. We accept certificates from these three and no others.

PSA/DNA
The autograph authentication arm of Professional Sports Authenticator. PSA/DNA examines a signature against exemplars and, where the signing was witnessed by their representative, applies a tamper-evident label with a serial number that resolves in PSA’s public certification lookup. Note that PSA/DNA is a different service from PSA card grading, which is discussed below.
JSA (James Spence Authentication)
JSA issues certification in two formats, and the difference matters. A sticker-only certification carries a numbered label and a matching short certificate. A full letter of authenticity is a signed document that describes the specific item and the specific signature examined; it is the stronger format and the one we prefer on higher-value pieces. Where a listing has a full letter, the listing says so.
Beckett Authentication Services (BAS)
Beckett’s autograph authentication division. BAS runs a witnessed programme, in which a Beckett representative observes the signing itself rather than forming an opinion on a signature after the fact, and a standard review programme for items submitted later. Witnessed items carry a hologram whose serial is reproduced on the certificate. BAS is distinct from Beckett Grading Services (BGS), which grades condition.

Autograph authentication is not condition grading

These two services are routinely conflated, including by sellers who should know better. They answer completely different questions and produce completely different numbers.

Autograph authentication

Answers: is this signature genuine? The output is an opinion, recorded on a certificate with a serial number. It is a yes, expressed as a certification — not a score. PSA/DNA, JSA and BAS all do this. Every autographed piece on this site carries one of these certificates.

Condition grading

Answers: what state of preservation is this item in?The output is a numeric grade on a scale, awarded after an examination of centring, corners, edges and surface. PSA grades on a 1–10 scale, where a PSA 10 is its top grade. BGS uses four subgrades and a composite, with a BGS 10 Black Labelrequiring a perfect 10 in all four. SGC grades on its own 1–10 scale. These are grading services, and a grade says nothing about whether a signature is genuine.

The practical consequence: a card can be graded PSA 10 and carry no autograph opinion at all, and an autographed jersey can be certified by PSA/DNA and carry no grade, because a jersey is not graded. If a listing quotes a grade, it will say which service awarded it. If it quotes a certification, it will say which house issued it. We do not print one and imply the other.

How to verify a piece yourself

  1. Read the certificate number off the product page. It is printed in full, not abbreviated.
  2. Enter it in the issuing house’s own certification lookup. PSA, JSA and Beckett each publish one, and each is free to use.
  3. Confirm the item the lookup describes matches the item on the page — the athlete, the object, and, where the certificate records it, the signing.
  4. When the piece arrives, check that the serial on the label, hologram or letter matches the serial you looked up.

What we do not claim

  • We are an independent reseller. We are not affiliated with, licensed by, or endorsed by any athlete, team, or league, and we do not represent them.
  • We do not describe a retail item as game-used. Where a bat, stick or jersey is a retail piece, the listing says so plainly.
  • Authentication is an expert opinion, not a laboratory result. It is the strongest assurance the market offers, and we treat a failed verification as our problem, not yours.

Certified by an independent third party

We do not authenticate our own inventory. Signatures are examined by an outside authentication house — PSA/DNA, JSA or Beckett Authentication Services — and the certificate they issue travels with the piece. Autograph authentication is an opinion on whether a signature is genuine; it is a separate service from condition grading, which assigns a numeric grade to an item’s state of preservation.
